Summary:

Apiezon N is widely used for providing thermal contact at low temperatures. Below about 0.5K the intrinsic thermal resistance of a thin layer of bonding agent is of little importance when compared to the Kapitza boundary resistance at the interface of different materials. The Kapitza resistance is of the same magnitude for many bonding materials. Therefore, using materials of higher thermal conductivity like GE7031 varnish or Epibond is of no advantage unless some mechanical strength of the bond is required. Specifically, Apiezon N grease is often used as a bonding agent between sample, thermometer and heater in specific heat measurements because it can be easily removed. Despite these frequent applications, specific heat measurements of Apiezon N grease at very low temperatures are lacking. Previous measurements extend only down to 0.4K.
